When it saw me in the garden, this rat snake decided to retreat to the trees. Unfortunately it chose to scale a winterberry holly that is only about seven feet tall.
I think that I would prefer a snake than rats, but I would not want to see it up a tree.

That looks like a serious snake. We have two black rat snakes in the garden this year that I’ve seen several times each. One is rather thin and perhaps 40-inches long; the other is heavier and over 4 feet. I always enjoy seeing them and try to keep an eye out. They seem collected and coolheaded, but I wouldn’t want to step on one.

Our forest seems to be full of Rat snakes – seeing more this year than ever. I think the invasive plant removal, resulting in sunny clearings with brush piled up, makes for snake heaven!
